Do unused wax melts lose their scent and how long do they last?

If you love home fragrance you probably have a good collection of wax melts stored away! These may be seasonal or you may have just stocked up during a sale, so you are probably wondering how long your wax melt stash will last if unused.

This depends on a number of things such as; how you store your wax melts, the type of wax your wax melts are made from, the wax melt packaging and the initial fragrance load of the wax melts.

The good news is that wax melts typically have a long shelf life and generally last over 12 months. Wax melts also need to cure for up to two weeks after being made to allow the fragrance to fully infuse with the wax. This helps create a stronger and more consistent fragrance, so if your wax melts have just arrived try leaving them a few more days before using them!

At Village Wax Melts we hand pour all our fragrances in small batches to ensure each and every wax melt is fully loaded with fragrance and we allow them to cure for 10 days before dispatching so our products arrive perfect every single time.

How to increase wax melt shelf life

  1. Step 1: Storage

How you store your wax melt collection can have a huge effect on how long your wax melts last, so always store them in a cool, dark place. If your wax melts get too warm  whilst you are storing them, the fragrance oil may start to release from the wax and this will affect the strength of your wax melts when you put them in your burner, so always avoid warm places and direct sunlight.

  1. Step 2: Packaging

If your wax melts come in plastic sealed packaging then there is no need to transfer them to another storage container, however if they are in paper or cardboard packaging it is a good idea to store them in a glass jar or a Tupperware container. Paper or cardboard packaging will absorb some of the fragrance from the wax melts and leave you with lovely smelling packaging but weaker wax melts!

  1. Step 3: Wax type

There are many different waxes used to make wax melts each with there pros and cons. Most wax melts are made from paraffin wax, soy wax or parasoy wax which is a combination of soy wax and paraffin wax. Parasoy wax helps provide the positive qualities of both paraffin and soy wax . Here at Village Wax Melts we use are own unique blend of paraffin and soy wax to provide a strong long lasting fragrance. 1. Step 4: Scent concentration and quality

How long your wax melts last is determined mainly by how much fragrance was added at the beginning and the quality of that fragrance. Every wax melt company has a particular blend and fragrance load requirement and some blends are suited better to different wax burners . The best way of knowing how your wax melts will perform in the future is by how they perform now. If your wax melts have a strong and long lasting scent now, they will most likely perform just as well in 12 months if stored in a cool dark place and in a sealed plastic or glass container. After 12 months your wax melts are still safe to use however the scent strength may start to weaken.
