What are wax burners?

A wax burner is used to melt wax melts. Melting the wax releases fragrance into your room over a long period of time creating a relaxing atmosphere.

There are two types of wax burner: electric and tea light. A tealight lasts around 2-4 hours whereas wax melts may last up to 8-9 hours, therefore multiple tealights can be used with each wax melt, one after the other.

Where did wax burners originate?

The first wax melt burner was used in the United Kingdom only around ten years ago when different large candle brands launched their wax melts.

How do wax burners work?

Wax burners work by slowly heating wax melts until they melt and release their fragrance into the room. Once you are satisfied with the scent in your room, you can then turn off the burner and allow the wax to solidify for the next use. Once the wax starts to reduce its smell, you can replace it with new wax.

How long does the wax burn?

Typically, a standard wax melt lasts 6-9 hours.  The burning time for each wax differs according to the wax, the fragrance, and the size and design of the burner.

What scents can you put in a wax burner?

What is the difference between a wax burner and an oil burner?

The main difference between an oil burner and a wax burner is the height, and how hot the burner dish gets.

Oil burners are generally smaller in height, and the dish reaches much higher temperatures than in a wax burner. These burners should not be used for wax melts because the overheating of the dish and wax could cause the dish to crack. This is a fire hazard because if the wax drips onto the flame of the tealight, this could start a fire.

The best way to differentiate between a wax burner and an oil burner is to look at the height of the burner. A burner for wax melts should be at least 10cm tall, and there should be a gap of at least 6.5cm inside the wax burner above the flame.

Remember to take cautionary steps when using a wax burner:

  • Always use a burner designed for wax melts.
  • Check your burner regularly for hairline cracks or chips before use.  Never use burners with cracks or chips as this can be a fire hazard.
  • Use 1 regular sized unscented tealight on your burner and do not add water.
  • Always keep out of reach of children and pets at all times.
  • Always keep in sight when burning. Never leave a lit tealight unattended.
  • Keep away from draughts.
  • Always pay attention to the safety information on the packaging.
  • Always keep your burner on a stable and heatproof surface away from fire hazards.
  • Remove all packaging before placing wax on your burner.
  • Use a suitable amount of wax for the size of your wax burner. Do not overfill.
  • Do not attempt to move your wax burner while burning.
